One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji is a masterpiece by a revered artist. Katsushika Hokusai was already in his mid-seventies when he completed work on the first volume of this three-volume illustrated book, which highlights the beauty and spirituality of Japan’s venerated mountain. Published in 1834, it followed close on the heels of his renowned print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (c. 1830–1832). While echoes of these iconic prints may be found within the pages of One Hundred Views, they sit among a wealth of bold new compositions as Hokusai exploited the monochromatic tones and format of the woodblock-printed book to their maximum.
