As a trailblazing artist, storyteller, educator, and feminist activist, Faith Ringgold used her art to reflect on overarching change while preserving her memories in mixed-media creations. The bold colorsand inventive compositions allowed her painted story quilts to blur the line between fine art and craft while highlighting the importance of family, cultural roots, and artistic collaboration. “No other creative field is as closed to those who are not white and male as is the visual arts,” she once said. “After I decided to be an artist, the first thing that I had to believe was that I, a Black woman, could penetrate the art scene, and that, further, I could do so without sacrificing one iota of my Blackness or my femaleness or my humanity.”
